So near, and yet so far.
This phrase best describes the complex relationship between Malaysia and Singapore.
At just 11 years old, my daughter Jess has already traveled much of the world. Yet, this was her first time experiencing the vibrant island city that her mom once called home.
I had the privilege and blessing of working in Singapore
early in my career, back in 2004.
Starting as an auditor at Chio Lim and later moving to KPMG, my time there was brief—only one year—but those intense, long working hours shaped me. It was an enriching journey, both in terms of technical skills and social life.
As the years passed, life took over. Growing families, busy schedules—we all drifted apart. While social media helped us stay somewhat connected, nothing compares to meeting in person.
Reaching out after nearly two decades took courage. I texted my former colleague,
“Hello, Senior! Any chance for a meet-up this Sunday? I’ll be in Singapore.”
After 18 years apart, I wasn’t sure what to expect. To my joy, we not only reconnected, but also brought along our children. It was a cozy catch-up, reminiscing about what keeps us busy these days. I was delighted to hear that my once-work buddy Gerard had risen to become an audit partner.
I still remember those grueling late nights, drowning in endless review points, vouching for transactions, and reconciling cash flow statements. Back then, we naïvely dreamt about what it would be like to become an audit partner:
“How wonderful life would be, signing off audit reports with a Montblanc pen!”
We couldn’t have imagined the reality.
I was particularly impressed when he mentioned that, despite his busy career, he had completed the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon! It was inspiring to see him staying healthy and fit while balancing the demands of his job.
Given his packed schedule, I didn’t expect a meet-up, but I made sure to drop off a pack of our Pineapple Mix at his office lobby as a small gesture.
I did catch up with another ex-colleague, Thommy, who’s doing incredibly well in his financial planning career. He gave me a tour of his office, and we reminisced about the old days.
Thommy has always been a close friend, and he fondly recalled the support I gave him back then.
Aside from work, I also reconnected with my schoolmates.
During those years, when we were all away from our families, we often found solace in each other’s company. I am thrilled to find that my beloved friend—whom I hadn’t seen since 2012—prepared a delicious meal to host us in her cozy home, surrounded by family. It was a heartwarming reunion.
